Sawa Leader Olivia on the left, Sawa World founder Daphne on the right and the amazing Faraida in the middle. Faraida was burned by her stepmother at the very young age of four and has struggled in extreme poverty her whole life. She is now eighteen years old and was given an amazing opportunity by Olivia last March. Sawa World set Olivia up with ‘Straight Talk’ A local radio/print company, to do a cover story of her work. After that story was aired eight girls found Olivia and wanted her help. One of which was Faraida. Although very shy Faradia phoned Olivia, but she hung up three times! before getting up the courage to ask for her help. She also needed transportation money to get from her village to Kampala. Olivia sent the money, thinking this girl must be very desperate for her to be phoning so much. When Olivia picked her up at the bus station she saw the burn marks covering her body and Faraidas bent wrist. She was a little unsure how she could help this girl but with patience and time she is already making great strides. Faraida can now wash her own clothes, sew and stitch clothing. A skill she will turn into a source of income!! This is an amazing story where we can see the direct link to spreading local solutions and ending extreme poverty.

First day meeting the team! (From left to right - Joshua, Irene and Stephen) My flight arrived last night at about 1am and my bag had been lost somewhere en-route! So it was a little tricky starting out with no change of clothes or my malaria medication … But despite all this and the serious jet lag it was an AWESOME day. I got to meet a lot of the team and talk with them a bit. They are an amazing bunch. Inspiring and dedicated. The next two days will be very busy with our full team meeting tomorrow and a community screening on saturday. But I am very excited for tomorrow night when we are going on a team bowling outing! AND my bag just arrived!!!

We stood
Steady as the stars in the woods
So happy-hearted
And the warmth rang true inside these bones
We stood
